THE THEME OF THE DAY

As after the right-wing demonstrations in Chemnitz resistance becomes loud

Instead of right-wing slogans and Hitler salute, there will be tolerance in Chemnitz tonight: Musicians like the Toten Hosen, Kraftklub or Fine Cream fish fillet will give a free concert in the Saxon town under the motto "#wirsindmehr". It's about, "finally come out of this shock," write fine cream fish fillet on Facebook. Tens of thousands are expected. They want to set an example against racism, xenophobia and violence.

Allegedly out of mourning for the killed Daniel H., thousands of people participated in right-wing demonstrations in Chemnitz last week. The team of the ZDF program "Frontal 21" spoke with friends of the victim; they say that Daniel H. never wanted his case to be used for spamming from the right. The demonstrations had resulted in crimes and attacks on non-German-looking people and journalists.

But also about the protest concert is disputed. CDU General Secretary Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, for example, criticizes the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who also supported the performance of Feine Sahne Fischfilet. Reason: The punk band was listed in 2011 in the constitution protection report of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a left-wing extremist.

SPD General Secretary Lars Klingbeil countered the criticism: "The Union has really lost the sense of what is happening in this country," he tells the SPIEGEL.

If you can not make it to Chemnitz today: Here you can follow the concert in a livestream.
