THE THEME OF THE DAY

"The mother of all problems": How Interior Minister Seehofer risked new strife in the Union

For Horst Seehofer, Germany is a "divided country". And: "The mother of all political problems in this country", said the Minister of the Interior and CSU leader of the "Rheinische Post", was the question of migration. On Wednesday he had expressed similar at a retreat of the CSU state group in Brandenburg.

Asked about the riots in Chemnitz, to which Seehofer had long been silent, he told the Rheinische Post: "If I were not a minister, I would have taken to the streets as a citizen - of course not together with Radicals."

Sharp contradiction comes from other parties and also from the ranks of the coalition partner, such as SPD Vice President Ralf Stegner, who teased about Seehofer as "grandfather of all Berlin government problems".

Above all, however, comes the contradiction from the Chancellor Angela Merkel: I say that differently, "she said in the RTL summer interview." I say, the migration question presents us with challenges. And there are also problems. "But there are also successes.

A split country? My colleague Florian Gathmann sees the rift rather go through the union. Here are those who consider the German migration policy wrong - there are the supporters of Merkel's line. For analysis.

"If the Interior and Constitutional (!) Minister proclaims that the migration question is the mother of all problems, yes, then he will not only be thankfully cited in these circles," writes my colleague Sebastian Fischer, "but then many will even one wavering Door open to the right. "
