THE THEME OF THE DAY

Was it a chase or not? Maaßen smiles Merkel

The assessment of the incidents in Chemnitz causes considerable tension between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the protection of the constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen. Merkel himself spoke after the right parades and demos in Chemnitz of a "hunt". Maaßen, however, sees no evidence that right-wing extremists persecuted foreign-looking people in Chemnitz. Our colleagues Florian Gathmann and Jörg Diehl explain why Maaßen suddenly publicly opposes the Chancellor.

There are several videos, testimonies and reports on attacks in Chemnitz on foreign people. A video spread particularly strongly in the net. The constitutional protection president now expresses doubts about the authenticity. He believes that it is even a deliberate misinformation. To date, Maaßen has not provided any evidence for his acceptance. My colleague Christoph Sydow took a closer look at the clip and the Twitter account that spread it over.

Meanwhile, a debate has broken out on the concept of "hunt-hunting". But what does he mean anyway? And how was he used so far? Our colleagues Andreas Evelt and Alexander Sarovic explain what is actually behind the word.

On so many ball contacts came the striker Marco Reus in the first game of the DFB-Elf after the blamable World Cup finish. No other player had less action on the ball in the goalless draw against World Champion France. Reus is one of the losers in the new system of the national team, find my colleagues Henrik Bahlmann and Malte Müller-Michaelis. But despite all the criticism: In contrast to the scary performances of the national team at the World Cup in Russia agreed in the DFB team at least again the attitude.

Whether with or without Sahra Wagenknecht and their left collecting movement "getting up": Anyone who wants to solve the major problems of our time needs everything - just not the liberal economic prescriptions of the past decades, writes Thomas Fricke in his column.

The recommendation for your closing time

What you might look at: "The Last Movie Star", one of Burt Reynolds' last films. The Hollywood star died on Thursday at the age of 82 years. A sex symbol and Western hero, but also one that critics have long underestimated, as our colleague Arno Frank writes.
