Giorgia Meloni appointed prime minister of Italy

Giorgia Meloni, head of the Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy) party, who won the legislative elections, on Friday commissioned the formation of a government by President Sergio Mattarella, according to what the Presidential Secretary-General announced.

Meloni, 45, accepted the responsibility, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the country's history.

On Friday afternoon, she will present her cabinet, which will be sworn in on Saturday morning.
