The case Relotius: SPIEGEL discloses a case of fraud in-house

The SPIEGEL editor Claas Relotius has falsified his own stories to a large extent and invented protagonists - he has deceived the readers and his colleagues. This was revealed after internal references, own research and finally a comprehensive confession of the editor himself.

The first suspicions arose after the publication of the text "Jaegers Grenze" about a US vigilante on the border between Mexico and the USA, which appeared in November 2018.

Reporter colleague Juan Moreno, who researched this story along with Relotius for SPIEGEL, became suspicious. Moreno reported his concerns to SPIEGEL. At first he ran against walls like a whistleblower who is not believed. But he did not give up and used a research trip in another matter to the US to collect material against Relotius - and to protect himself. Because even his name is above the dubious story.

After initial denial, Relotius finally confessed late last week. It turned out that he had completely invented entire passages, not only in the story "Jaegers Grenze", but in a variety of texts.
