Berlin (dpa / bb) - The New Year's Eve fireworks, which are significantly smaller due to the corona restrictions, saves the Berlin city cleaning service (BSR) some work.

"In our estimation, there is significantly less New Year's Eve rubbish than in previous years," said BSR spokesman Sebastian Harnisch on Friday to the German press agency.

"We hardly see any area-wide soiling, but rather selective pollution."

Due to the expected lower amount of garbage, there will be no BSR special assignment for New Year's cleaning this year, according to Harnisch.

On New Year's Eve, the BSR worked with the normal holiday occupation: Since around 6 a.m., around 260 employees have been cleaning streets and squares with brooms and shovels as well as 80 vehicles "decentralized and needs-based" - about half as many as usual after New Year's Eve.

In recent years, garbage had tended to increase because of the gunfire.

At the beginning of 2020, the BSR had collected 400 cubic meters of New Year's Eve rubbish.

The exact number for this year should be known at the weekend, said the BSR spokesman.
