Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's police are also preparing for illegal demonstrations on New Year's Eve.

It cannot be ruled out that there will be unauthorized gatherings - "be it lateral thinkers, be it from the left-wing extremist area," said police chief Barbara Slowik on Thursday on the RBB information radio.

There are such calls on the Internet.

"We have to keep an eye on that."

On Wednesday, two courts considered the ban on New Year's Eve and New Year's gatherings in Berlin during the corona pandemic to be legal.

Basically, the police expect that it will be a "special New Year's Eve with special tasks," said Slowik.

The main task is to prevent people from gathering because of the risk of infection.

The police want to control the fireworks prohibition zones - 56 in number in the whole city.

Anyone can find out more about these areas on the Internet, said Slowik.

She considers the Senate's regulations to be proportionate.

But of course there are areas where there is usually a lot of rumbling - "and there will be no failing this year," she said.

The police are well prepared.

The police union in Berlin (GdP) had criticized the prohibition zones as not feasible.

In the event of violations, the officials want to talk to people and point out the prohibitions, as Slowik explained.

A large part of them listen to the police.

But fines of up to 1000 euros are also possible.

A majority of Berliners consider the police chief to be “sensible” - they stayed at home and celebrated in a small group.

Slowik advised against making trips to the Brandenburg Gate.

Onlookers could not hear anything from the New Year's Eve TV show there, the gate was largely locked.

The government district will be intensively protected.

According to their own statements, the police are deployed with a good 2900 personnel.
