The worst affected are the southern states of Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Together, they account for 45 percent of the total death toll.

Most vulnerable are people living in the country's urban areas.

At the same time, Indian authorities have estimated the mortality rate of the disease at 1.56 percent, a low figure compared to several other countries in the world, and as a starting point eased the country's coronary restrictions.

Probably dark numbers

India now accounts for ten percent of the world's total deaths, but both domestic and foreign critics have pointed out that there is probably a large number of blacks.

On Friday, the country's medical association announced that at least 500 doctors had died from the coronavirus.

The association has previously criticized the government for indifference to how healthcare staff have been affected by the infection.
