Television footage showed the handover of Indian pilot Abhinandan, who was captured by Pakistan after his aircraft was shot down by Pakistani fighters on Wednesday after an air clash.

The pilot, accompanied by Pakistani soldiers, was seen at the border crossing between the two countries near the town of Wagah shortly before 9 pm (1600 GMT), where he was handed over to his country's troops.

Indian officials confirmed that he had returned to the country and undergo medical tests. "The medical examination is compulsory because the pilot was forced to jump off the plane," said senior air force official RJ K. Kapoor.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Moody expressed his admiration for the Indian pilot, saying the country was proud of his courage.
