Hear from Odessa residents about Russian and Ukrainian speaking in the city

Highlights: Odessa has many Russian-speaking inhabitants. Since the war broke out, several residents have begun to speak more Ukrainian. "I started speaking fluently two and a half months ago," says Iryna, who lives in Odessa. "If I have to fill in documents, I guess I'll have to learn," says Igor, who also lives in the city. "It's not a problem for me. I'm used to it," says another Odessa resident, who speaks Ukrainian.

The port city of Odessa has many Russian-speaking inhabitants. The city is claimed by Russia to be on their side in the war. SVT's team asked the people of Odessa what they think about the matter.


In Odessa, both Russian and Ukrainian are spoken. But since the war broke out, several Odessa residents have begun to speak more and more Ukrainian.

"I went to Russian school and went to college in Russian, but gradually I switched to Ukrainian. I started speaking fluently two and a half months ago," says Iryna, who lives in Odessa.

"I will hardly speak Ukrainian on a daily basis. If I have to fill in documents, I guess I'll have to learn," says Igor, who also lives in Odessa.
