- I was told from a very early age, around the age of ten and eleven, that I was too sexy. Very early on, I had to start dressing as an adult woman, because I started showing shapes, says Irja Piippo.

Wanted to confess their sins

When Irja became a teenager, she began partying and meeting friends outside of Jehovah's. After a period of much partying, she got a bad conscience and decided to talk to her congregation.

- I felt that I needed to improve my life after a weak one, I had been out partying and had sex outside of marriage. Then I wanted to confess my sins and was called to a meeting, she says.

The meeting was attended by six older men, who in Jehovah's Witnesses are called elders.

- First you are told what you have done and then you have to go into details about what you have done. It is very unsettling to tell but apparently they must know what positions, how many times you have had sex and with whom. As an interrogation, says Irja Piippo.

How do they motivate them to know? Do they?

- No, you don't question.

Hard to say

According to Irja Piippo, it is difficult for Jehovah's young women to tell whether they are being harassed by a man.

- You have to constantly think about your sexuality and be ashamed. If you are exposed to something and turn to a parent for example, you will be told that it was your own fault and that you are to blame yourself.

Dag-Erik Kristoffersen, press contact for Jehovah's Witnesses in Sweden, writes to SVT that they do not want to comment on Irja's information on the grounds that their defectors are entitled to their own history.
