The first set was a swinging affair where the players broke each other's serve a total of five times. Coco Gauff, however, was the one who drew the longest straw as she won the set after breaking the Czech serve for the third time.

Just 19-year-old Gauff then started set two by winning the first game. But then the game was interrupted by a climate action in the stands of Arthur Ashe Stadium, when three people wearing T-shirts reading "Stop fossil fuels" started shouting the same message over and over again.

"Nothing against the sport"

When security personnel were about to remove the trio from the stadium, one of them responded by gluing himself to the concrete floor and the match was delayed by about 50 minutes.

"We're not trying to hurt the players in any way. We have nothing against the sport. But we are trying to draw attention to a problem that will mean that in the end there will be no tennis left for the world to enjoy," one of the activists told the AP news agency afterwards.

Muchova saved five match balls

As play resumed, the crowd witnessed a close battle with the two semi-finalists holding their serves until 3-3, after which Gauff broke and had the chance to serve their way to a place in the final.

But it was not to be that easy, instead she lost her serve and a dramatic resolution awaited where Gauff finally won after Muchova saved the first five match balls.

"Really proud"

In the final, the winner of the match between the future world number one Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus and the American Madison Keys awaits.

"I really believe I have the maturity and quality to do it. But no matter what happens on Saturday, I'm really proud of how I've handled the last few weeks," Gauff said.
