The Women's World Cup kicked off on 5 September, with world No. 16 Spain beating Switzerland 6-5 to advance to the last eight for the first time.

Prior to Japan against Norway, Spain faced world No. 1 Switzerland, who finished first in Group A after losing to Japan in Group C of the first round.

Spain took the lead in the fifth minute after Switzerland kept a clean sheet in the first round, and then equalised with an own goal that went straight into the goal from a back pass to the goalkeeper.

Nevertheless, they broke down their opponents' defence and took the initiative, winning the match with a header in the 1th minute of the first half, and adding two more goals, including an own goal scorer, to take a 2-1 lead.

Spain continued to attack one-sidedly in the second half, adding one more goal and overwhelming Switzerland, who had only two shots on target with 20 shots in the match, to win 1-5.

Spain will reach the last eight for the first time in their third appearance at the World Cup and will face the winner of the Netherlands v South Africa in the quarter-finals on 17 June.

Switzerland finished the World Cup in the last 2, the same as in 4.
