Six months after Pelé's death, the public can now visit the grave of the Brazilian football legend. On Monday, the mausoleum of the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica Memorial Cemetery opened in Santos outside São Paulo.

The floor of the 200 square metre room is covered in artificial turf and in the middle stands the gilded tomb with Pelé's remains.

"It's reminiscent of a football stadium. People can walk onto the grass, like he did countless times," said Pelé's son Edson Cholbi Nascimento, also known as Edinho.

"This was done with a lot of love by people who loved and knew him.

Just 60 people per day

Initially, the number of visitors is limited to 60 people per day.

Pelé, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, is the only one to have won three World Cup gold medals and is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. He scored 1,283 goals during his 21-year career, most of them playing with Santos.

He passed away on December 29, 2022 after a long period of cancer, and the vigil in Santos attracted over 200,000 people. Pelé was 82.
