After two finals, in 1998 and last year, Switzerland finally won the Billie Jean King Cup, the women's national tennis team competition, beating Australia in the final in Glasgow on Sunday.

The Swiss, led by the intractable Olympic champion Belinda Bencic, finally did as well as their compatriots Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka who won the first - and only to date - Davis Cup for Switzerland in 2014.

Sunday against Australia, finalist in 2019 and which aimed for an eighth coronation in the ex-Fed Cup since its first, in 1974, Bencic and Jil Teichmann were not there to experience a new disappointment.

Bencic and Teichman untouchable

Teichman, 35th in the world, overcame the resistance of Storm Sanders (237th) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, before Bencic (12th) offered the trophy to the Swiss team, giving Ajla no chance Tomljanovic (33rd), swept away 6-2, 6-1.

In total, out of ten matches played in the competition, Switzerland have lost only one, twice against Canada in the group stage.

The doubles in the semi-finals against the Czech Republic and in the final were not played since the victories had been ensured each time by winning the two singles.

In turn, Italy (3-0), Canada (2-1), the Czech Republic (2-0) and Australia (2-0) therefore folded against the players of Swiss captain Heinz Günthardt.

In addition to Bencic and Teichmann (35th), Viktorija Golubic (77th) and Simona Waltert (120th) also brought their stone to the building.

savor the victory

Golubic notably victoriously replaced Teichmann, left to rest after a tough battle against the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto (65th) in the Swiss women's first match in the competition, to beat the Canadian Bianca Andreescu (45th).

Only Waltert will not have brought a point to her team since she played alongside Teichmann this double lost against Canada.

But on Sunday, she could savor the taste of victory with her teammates!
