THE THEME OF THE DAY

Deutsche Bahn and its crisis management

Did you drive four times by train in 2018? Then you were at least once too late, according to the statistics. 25.1 percent of the ICEs, Intercitys and Eurocitys did not reach their destination on time last year. Trains that were only six minutes late or did not arrive are even exempt. That causes trouble - for the customers, but also for the company. Rail boss Richard Lutz is worried about his job and had today to report to Transport Minister Scheuer. Again.

Because the state-owned company is still in a serious crisis. Delays, technical disruptions, staff shortages or overcrowded trains - the problems of the railway are extensive. Not to mention the bad image that has been caused by years of misconduct. In order to get the problems under control, infrastructure board member Ronald Pofalla was appointed as crisis manager. My colleague Michael Kröger explains what goes wrong with the company.

After a first meeting on Tuesday, the government was still dissatisfied. Scheuer made clear demands: By summer, customers should feel an improvement. Now Lutz has presented a package of measures to make this possible. Above all, problems on heavily traveled routes should be remedied faster and prevented in advance. However, many of the measures introduced were already known. At a next meeting with the Deutsche Bahn leadership on January 30, Scheuer wants to discuss the financing and the structures of the group.

The recommendations for your closing time

What you can see: "How the fuck did not do this happen?" The intro of Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 11/9" ends today in German cinemas. The director deals with how Donald Trump became US president. The work is "the two-hour diagnosis of a political-social crisis," writes my colleague Andreas Borcholte. Overall, the film is "as depressing as entertaining" - even if Moore's suggestive analysis here and there is questionable.
