A gunman killed at least 21 people, according to a provisional toll by emergency services, and wounded dozens more at a university building in central Prague, Czech police said Thursday (December <>st), saying the attacker had been "eliminated".

"The building is currently being evacuated and there are several dead and dozens injured at the scene," she added in the brief statement.

According to Czech media, the shooting occurred at the Faculty of Arts, whose teachers and students were ordered to lock themselves in while the police intervened.

The private broadcaster Nova TV reported an explosion and a gunman on the roof of the building in Prague's historic centre.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan told state television that the presence of "no other gunmen" had been "confirmed" and called on the population to follow police instructions.

Police cordoned off the area and asked people living nearby to stay at home.
