Czech policeman near shooting site in central Prague (European)

Police in the Czech Republic said a gunman opened fire on Thursday inside a university building in the capital Prague, killing more than 15 people before being killed.

Police said in a statement that 24 others were injured in the attack, and the ambulance service said earlier in the day that 11 people, including the attacker, were killed and 9 seriously wounded.

It took place at Charles University Faculty of Art on Jan Blash Square in Prague's historic centre.

Police said the attacker was an art college student, and authorities confirmed the incident was not terrorism-related.

Czech Interior Minister Milan Fearanic confirmed the death of the attacker, whose motive was not immediately clear.

A large police force intervened and cordoned off the building before announcing that the gunman had been eliminated.

Teachers and students were instructed to lock the doors of their rooms while police tried to finish the job.

Pictures showed students leaving the university building with their hands raised.

Czech President Petr Pavel expressed shock at the attack, while France was quick to express solidarity with the Czech Republic.
