A shooting at Charles University in Prague has caused an unspecified number of deaths and injuries on Thursday, Czech police said.

"An unknown assailant opened fire shortly after 15:00 p.m. (14:00 GMT) at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University of Prague, on Jan Palach Square," in the heart of the capital, Radio Prague International said.

He added that there are dead and a significant number of wounded at the scene and that, despite the fact that the forces of law and order have moved to the scene, the shooter, equipped with a long gun with a telescopic sight, continued to shoot. Shortly after, they have reported that the shooter has been "eliminated."
