Sudan: Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Djibouti looking for a way out of the crisis

The head of the Sudanese army was in Djibouti on Sunday (November 26th). Abdel Fattah al-Burhan met with Ismail Omar Guelleh, the president of Djibouti and current chairman of IGAD, the regional organisation of the Horn of Africa. At the heart of the discussions was the seven-month-old conflict between General al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, head of the Rapid Support Forces. For several weeks, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been meeting with the heads of state of IGAD member countries.

During their meeting, the two men welcomed the various initiatives to find a way out of the crisis in Sudan, such as that of the African Union and the Jeddah talks, promoted by the United States and Saudi Arabia. They nevertheless reiterated the need to coordinate so as not to disperse, according to the Djibouti News Agency.

«

The continuation of the war [...] paves the way for foreign interventions aimed at dividing Sudan " said Ismail Omar Guelleh who recalled that IGAD was one of the first institutions to attempt mediation since Sudan is a member.

On his way back, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan took a detour to Asmara, Eritrea, where he met at the airport with President Isaias Afwerki.

According to a statement from the Transitional Sovereign Council, the head of the Sudanese army is calling for an IGAD summit on Sudan to be held soon.

Ten days earlier, he had made the request in Kenya and Ethiopia.

For some observers in the region, General al-Burhan wants to see IGAD regain control of the negotiations as it loses ground militarily, particularly in Darfur.
