BEIRUT – Solving homework is one of the daunting tasks facing students, especially in advanced educational stages, as it requires a deep understanding of the material and close follow-up from parents.

It seems that the emergence of artificial intelligence - as a promising technology - can help students solve their homework, as artificial intelligence can analyze questions and provide solutions, in addition to providing a simplified explanation of difficult concepts.

Experts confirm that the new developments allow the production of texts, images and various contents, including helping children complete their homework, by taking a picture of a mathematical problem that the program solves, while writing the steps to teach the student how to solve the same.

Enhancing students' competence

Technology and applications specialist Maxim Taha says AI tools "enhance students' efficiency in studying and solving assignments. They are useful in completing routine tasks such as editing, grammar and formatting, all of which facilitate quick learning."

He shows Al Jazeera Net that "GPT Chat", for example, acts as an instant assistant and facilitates understanding terminology, answering complex questions, and addressing problems easily.

For difficult queries, Taha advises using GPT Chat 4, as "previous versions may contain inaccurate information."

Different questions can be asked, and answers can be provided regardless of the topic, whether the questions are related to mathematics, history, science, geography, or any other subject, Chat GPT tries to provide accurate and accurate information.

What does AI offer students?

According to Taha, AI can provide a simplified explanation of difficult concepts, which helps students understand the material better, improves their self-learning skills, and helps them solve homework, including:

  • Solve complex mathematical equations.
  • Explain scientific theories.
  • Writing expressive texts.
  • Writing research in a creative way.
  • Clarify complex terms, words and meanings during the study.

Does AI negatively affect students?

Educational counsellor Anna Hovanezian stresses that these tools should not be treated as a substitute for thinking and hard work.

There are many fears of the negative impact of artificial intelligence on education, alone in developing students' critical thinking skills, as they will receive information quickly and easily, without thinking or effort.

"One of the most important negatives is the lack of verification of the information contained in the research as well as the activities and tasks that students are required to develop certain skills, which may not be developed by relying on an artificial intelligence tool, which many international universities have denounced and banned its use," according to Hovanizian.

The educational advisor believes that the misuse of modern technologies would lead to "the graduation of students who are not highly scientifically competent, and most of the fears were fundamentally moral. It is necessary to emphasize the importance of the human and human factor in the educational process between students and professors."

Hovanezian stresses that students' use of artificial intelligence techniques to get correct answers easily and without the need to study and prepare for tests, "leads to increased cheating rates, due to the provision of quick and accurate answers to students, and they may become less likely to think, analyze and conclude, and thus affect their mental and thinking abilities in the future."

She considers that the most prominent disadvantage of artificial intelligence lies in the high rate of laziness among students with a lack of creativity.

Questions need answers!

For its part, Time for Kids suggested ways to raise the levels of education using artificial intelligence, pointing to the possibility of combining traditional and modern methods to revolutionize education.

On the other hand, the site pointed to the danger of over-reliance on the "intelligence" of modern tools, noting that it is not at the level of intelligence that many imagine, "as these tools are not designed for logical thinking ... These tools are programmed to learn from the information they are fed with, and tend to have repetitive patterns."

Time for Kids stresses the need for students to be interested in information sources, "and to judge what needs to be believed as a reliable source, so that they can coexist with artificial intelligence tools and other technological developments."
