When Ukraine gained access to the British Storm Shadow cruise missile in May, it had new opportunities to strike the enemy: far behind the front line. The cruise missile has a range of at least 30 km and has been used several times – including against the Russian Black Sea Fleet off the annexed Crimean peninsula.

"They want to gain an operational advantage so that the Russian plan does not work," says Lieutenant Colonel Joakim Paasikivi.

But Russia also has access to long-range missiles, with significantly longer ranges.
