"By now, most of our compatriots have already left the enclave and been taken to Moscow by planes of the Russian Emergencies Ministry," the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its website.

The ministry noted that "all parties involved, primarily the Israelis and Egyptians, are closely cooperating with each other, including through the special services, at the stage of compiling lists of persons who can be issued permits to leave Gaza."

The Russian Foreign Ministry added that no person can leave the sector without the consent of the Israelis.

Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin, during a government meeting, called the evacuation of Russian citizens from the Gaza Strip a sacred duty.
