Virginie Girod SEASON 2023 - 202416h42, November 22, 2023

Listen to the fourth episode of the special series on the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his death. Thanks to the Europe 1 archives, relive the key moments of this major event of the twentieth century, through the journalists and witnesses who lived through it.

The official version of the JFK assassination investigation places the blame on one man, Lee Harvey Oswald. This is the conclusion of the Warren Commission, launched by US President Lyndon B. Johnson in order to unveil the whole truth and close the case once and for all. Despite its 6000 pages of thickness, the report struggles to convince many Americans for whom the investigation was botched: Lee Harvey Oswald was still murdered as he left a police station!

The Warren report has been scrutinized by journalists and independent investigators who have pointed out its inconsistencies, particularly on the number and origin of the shots. This is fertile ground for conspiracy theories that are multiplying about the assassination of the American president. They argue that Lee Harvey Oswald could not have acted alone to kill the president of the world's leading power.

The 7th art will take hold of this historical event to turn it into a cultural object. In 1991, the film JFK by American director Oliver Stone was released. The film also challenges the conclusions of the Warren Report, and presents Lee Oswald as a puppet in the hands of the CIA. According to the scenario, Kennedy is assassinated because the U.S. president wanted to withdraw his troops from Vietnam, and end the Cold War with the Soviet Union. Oliver Stone is in fact largely repeating the thesis of Jim Garrison, a prosecutor in New Orleans, who conducted his own investigation in the 60s. A cult film, the theory developed by Oliver Stone was widely criticized.

60 years after the fact, JFK's assassination is still an object of fascination and speculation. Several waves of declassification of official documents have taken place: 13,000 documents were made available to the public in December 2022. But the White House is still blocking the publication of thousands more and with them the prospect of shedding light, perhaps, on the last remaining grey areas of the JFK assassination.
