It was on April 18 earlier this spring, that the now accused 56-year-old man was observed in an area northeast of Alingsås with an automatic weapon. An incident that then escalated when the first police patrol arrived at the scene.
The man opened fire with his AK4 assault rifle from inside a wooded area and fired a total of 42 shots at the police patrols at the scene. Now he faces 16 years in prison after he is charged with, among other things, three attempted murders of police officers.
"The fact that it is directed at police officers during an ongoing operation shows an indifference to democracy in Sweden," prosecutor Andreas Lennartsson previously told SVT Nyheter Väst.
The trial, which lasted for four days in Alingsås District Court, ended on Tuesday. According to the prosecutor, the man had a hard time remembering what happened on April 18.
"He has expressed that he had no recollection of the incident, only small fragments," says prosecutor Andreas Lennartsson.
The man has admitted that he had the weapon but denies aggravated weapons offenses and attempted murder.
The 56-year-old man will remain in custody until a verdict is ordered. A verdict in the case is expected on November 29.
