Italian artist Eduardo Castaldo expresses solidarity with Gaza in the streets of Naples (social media)

The famous Italian artist Eduardo Castaldo resorted to an innovative way to declare his solidarity with Gaza by transforming famous paintings in Naples into paintings that depict some of the Israeli massacres that are happening to the population in the Gaza Strip over a period of 39 days.

Eduardo posted on his Instagram account scenes of the conversion of paintings and advertising into drawings symbolizing solidarity with the people of the Gaza Strip, as a result of the crimes they are subjected to due to the Israeli occupation raids.

A video published by the painter on Sunday showed the transformation of a painting by Italian artist Michelangelo Merizzi, nicknamed "Caravaggio", displayed in the streets of the city, into paintings that support and solidarity with the Palestinian cause in creative and distinctive ways.

"Art needs truth to exist. It is for this reason that Zionism will always fail in its colonial efforts. Caravaggio stands with Palestine."

The footage showed Castaldo adding minor additions and modifications to the paintings and cultural and commercial advertisements, which contributed to the complete change of these drawings.

On October 14, in another scene, Castaldo turned a Nike billboard showing an athlete holding a basketball and ready to shoot it into a painting of a Palestinian holding a Molotov cocktail, placing the Palestinian keffiyeh to cover the athlete's head on the main board while replacing the basketball with a Molotov cocktail.

The poster, which he redesigned, titled "Resist the Occupation," was captioned in the video: "Our latest artwork in support of Palestine, Zionism these days is colonizing our media, public opinion, police and laws. Resistance is now, more than ever, a global issue."

The Italian police arrested the painter and detained him for 4 hours, and sentenced him to a fine of 400 euros, but then he went out to continue his career: "The investigative police stopped us and took us to the police station for hours because we were making works of art to express solidarity with Palestine. We left four hours later with a fine (4 euros) and we will continue to support our Palestinian brothers and sisters. The artwork will be completed very soon."

"This is Naples today, our latest artwork in solidarity with the Palestinian resistance. We were forcibly taken to the police station while this painting was working, they kept us for hours. We will not stop. Israel cannot colonize art because art needs truth to exist."

The Al-Aqsa flood operation was not the beginning of the Italian artist's show of solidarity with Palestine and Gaza, as he had previously published on the fourth of November 2022 a video showing him placing a picture of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu behind iron bars, and commented in the attached text by saying, "Benjamin Netanyahu in his previous governments killed thousands of innocent people, and hundreds of children were imprisoned and tortured daily under his rule."
