For TotalEnergies, gas will remain essential regardless of the future energy scenario

TotalEnergies has no intention of drawing a line under natural gas. He even predicts a bright future for this fossil fuel and greenhouse gas emitter. In a report published on Tuesday 14 November, the French hydrocarbon giant predicts that the share of natural gas in global energy demand will remain around 22 to 24% by 2050, regardless of the scenario and the global effort to halt global warming.

This forecast supports TotalEnergies' strategy, as the group aims to increase its production so that gas accounts for half of its sales by 2030.

Gas that will continue to be needed in the years and decades to come, confirms Simone Tagliapietra, a specialist in energy and climate issues at the Bruegel Institute:

« Gas will play an important role in helping Asia – especially China and India – reduce the use of coal. And then gas is used in sectors, for example industrial, for which it is difficult to rely solely on electricity. Now, after 2030-2040, we are talking about a gas with a carbon capture and storage system. This should help decarbonize it. »

Carbon capture, an energy-intensive and still expensive technology.

However, Simone Tagliapietra considers TotalEnergies' forecasts high:

« In the International Energy Agency's scenarios - or by others - in line with a climate neutrality scenario, the role of gas remains significant, but it is in the order of 10 to 15%, not 25%. That sounds like a lot to me. »

TotalEnergies acknowledges this divergence in this report, published just two weeks before the opening of COP28. A COP where, stresses Simone Tagliapietra, the oil and gas giants should not fail to accentuate the role of gas in the transition.
