The murder of radio presenter Juan Jumalon during a live broadcast has sparked outrage in the Philippines. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. strongly condemned the violence on Sunday and ordered the police to find those responsible and bring them to justice.
Jumalon, also known as "DJ Johnny Walker," was shot and killed by an unknown assailant on Sunday morning while broadcasting from his home in the southern Philippine city of Calamba, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said. The act of violence was shown in a livestream on Facebook.
The Philippines has one of the most liberal media environments in Asia's media landscape, but it remains one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, especially in the provinces.
Jumalon's assassination brings the number of journalists killed since Marcos took office in June 2022 to four. According to a survey by the Committee to Protect Journalists, the Philippines is the eighth worst country when it comes to prosecuting murders of journalists.
