An anthropologist shopping at a thrift store in Florida was surprised when he found a skull in the Halloween section that he said was authentic and human, authorities said.

The surprising discovery came Saturday at a store in the city of North Fort Myers, on Florida's southwest coast, when a shopper saw a skull, examined it and determined it was a human being.

Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff's Office confirmed the unnamed anthropologist's opinion that the skull belonged to a human.

The sheriff, Carmine Marceno, posted several photographs of the skull placed on the glass of a display case on social media and expressed surprise at the find.

The store owner said the skull had been sitting in his warehouse for years.

The sheriff's office does not believe it is a "suspicious or criminal case" and is currently working with the county medical examiner on conducting several tests on the skull to try to find out the person's identity.

Under Florida law, "no person may knowingly offer to buy or sell... any human organ or tissue in exchange for valuable consideration," according to CBSMiami.

It's unclear if anyone will face charges in connection with the discovery of the skull at the thrift store.
