A 96-year-old woman from Alguazas (Murcia) has died at the Morales Meseguer hospital this weekend as a result of serious bites from two dogs that attacked her in El Paje last Tuesday, according to municipal sources.

The animals bit the woman all over her body, tearing her arms, without the medics who came in an ambulance being able to attend to her until the owners of the two dogs arrived and managed to stop their aggression and calm them down.

According to the city council, these events that took place last Tuesday afternoon "are inadmissible and the irresponsibility of some people in complying with the rules on the ownership of animals have caused damage that is irreparable," said the mayor, José Gabriel García.

From the City Council of Alguazas the owners of the animals were sanctioned and in the instruction of the files, according to the consistory, "exemplary measures will be taken against the culprits".

In addition, criminal proceedings have been opened for these events in which the Local Police, the Civil Guard and the Spanish National Association for Animal Protection and Rehabilitation (Anerpa) had to act.

The Department of Animal Welfare of Alguazas assures that these dogs considered of a "potentially dangerous" breed did not comply with the municipal ordinance or with the new Animal Welfare law as they do not have a microchip implanted, vaccinations are not updated, they are not registered in the consistory or have civil liability insurance, as well as a license for their ownership.

This death is in addition to that of a 27-year-old woman on the 23rd attacked by several grazing mastiffs in the municipality of La Hiniesta (Zamora).

The City Council of Alguazas will dedicate a minute of silence tomorrow at noon at the doors of the consistory in memory of the victim.
