The airport in the capital of Dagestan, a Muslim-majority Russian republic, suspended all flights after dozens of anti-Israel protesters invaded the terminal and runway, the Russian air agency announced on Sunday.

"After unknown assailants broke into the traffic area, it was decided to temporarily close the airport for take-offs and landings," air traffic controller Rosaviatsia said, adding that security forces had been deployed at the scene.

The airport is in the southern Russian city of Makhachkala and had to be closed after a group of protesters rushed onto the runway, the aviation authority said.

According to Rosaviatsia, all planes bound for Makhachkala in the Dagestan region were diverted to other airports.

Media in the area reported that demonstrators denouncing Israel's actions in Gaza had crowded the airport.
