The acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will attend the international summit to be held in Egypt this Saturday to address the current conflict in the Gaza Strip following the terrorist attack perpetrated by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) against Israel on 7 October, the Government has announced.

The summit, convened by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, will address the current situation in the region and the acute humanitarian crisis in Gaza, as well as the future of the Palestinian cause and the peace process, Moncloa said in a statement, which framed this meeting in the effort to "mobilise the international community with the aim of stopping the current spiral of violence and seeking solutions to the conflict". The president will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.

Saturday's meeting organized by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is expected to be attended by several leaders from the region as well as some Europeans and there has even been speculation that US President Joe Biden, who was already in Israel on Wednesday, may attend.

According to the Egyptian press, those who have confirmed their attendance include Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, as well as the emirs of Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait, and the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, among others, as well as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Likewise, according to Moncloa, other countries such as Germany, France or Italy, at European level, as well as Algeria and Morocco, as well as China or Brazil, have also been invited.

Sánchez already spoke with Al Sisi on Tuesday and Albares also held a telephone conversation with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, on Thursday to discuss "the situation in Gaza and the region".

"We must prevent the escalation of violence, protect the civilian population and guarantee the entry of humanitarian aid," Albares said in a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter). "We must work to reach a definitive peace solution," he said.
