The County Administrative Board has an ongoing project to fish out the invasive species Canada char so that it does not compete with the native Storsjö char. This has meant that large amounts of Canadian trout are sometimes thrown away.

"It's nice fish to eat, so it's a bit of fun, instead of throwing it away," says Anders Dahlén of the County Administrative Board of Jämtland, who has been involved in fishing for the char.

Fresh fish for the elderly

But in connection with the public meal day that was celebrated on Thursday, the idea was hatched that the Canadian char could be a source of a little extra silver lining on food for the elderly in Krokom municipality.

"It's a bit of extra work to take care of such fresh ingredients, but it also adds joy to the job," says Tina Lodin, chef and supervisor at lomkransen's nursing home in Krokom.

Lunch on Thursday therefore consisted of char with locally grown potatoes, chive sauce and vegetables.
