A Libyan activist has documented the horror she and her family experienced in the early moments of the devastating flood that left thousands dead in eastern Libya.

The footage shows the activist and her family gathering in a state of panic and terror amid the shouts of those present as their house was flooded while inside.

The activist said that she and her family headed at three o'clock in the morning to the seventh floor, to escape the flood after the water reached the fifth floor of the Beach Tower building in Derna.

The activist added that she and her family miraculously escaped death, while many of her friends, neighbours and relatives were washed away.
