"It's clear that services are going away, but we still don't know which ones or where," says Jenny Brindbergs, local chairman of the Swedish Teachers Union in Malung-Sälen municipality.

When we meet Jenny Brindbergs, she has just been to an information meeting with the municipality and learned that the proposal is to save 4 positions in preschool, and 14 in compulsory school.

"Among other things, it is student assistants that are planned to be removed," she says.

Unclear impact of savings

Exactly how the business will be affected by the savings is too early to say, but Jenny Brindbergs is worried about what it will mean for the school.

"If we can't provide resources so that they get through school and have a good education, then we send them on to the social services to take over – and they also go backwards.

Will be noticed

Erik Gustafsson (M), chairman of the Children and Youth Committee (BUN) in Malung-Sälen municipality, which was involved in making the decision, also believes that there will be consequences.

"It will be noticeable for the staff who remain. It might just be a little harder.

He says that he is concerned about the savings, but that the municipality must find new ways of working. The proposal also includes merging vice-chancellor areas and reducing the number of vice-chancellors.

"After all, we only have the money we have, so it is important that we use it in the best way.
