"Based on the results of the pre-investigation check on the fact of poisoning of guests of one of the hotels, the investigator of the investigative department for the city of Istra initiated a criminal case (Part 1 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of Russia)," the ministry said in a statement.

Investigators and forensic experts are currently continuing to work at the scene to establish the circumstances. Hotel employees are also being questioned, and Rospotrebnadzor has seized food samples.

Earlier it was reported that the court of Yekaterinburg sentenced six defendants in the criminal case of mass poisoning with surrogate alcohol to imprisonment for terms ranging from 5.5 to 6.5 years.
