About 2,000 people, including a dozen LFI and EELV deputies, marched Saturday in Paris in memory of the 24-year-old, who died seven years ago shortly after his arrest by gendarmes.

The gathering had been banned by the police headquarters, which cited fears of public order disturbances after the recent urban violence.

The presidential majority on Tuesday called on Ms. Braun-Pivet to punish these left-wing deputies, and the elected RN asked for legal proceedings.

The behaviour of these MPs "contributes once again to misuse and degrade the parliamentary function", also denounced Ms Braun-Pivet in a letter in response to the presidents of the allied groups Renaissance-MoDem-Horizons.

By participating in this forbidden gathering, which is moreover girded with their tricolor scarf, they "knowingly flout the laws of the Republic", points out the holder of the "perch".

But the office of the National Assembly that she chairs is "not the appropriate body" to sanction the facts because they occurred outside the walls of the institution.

"These behaviours seem to be fully within the competence of the judicial authority," Braun-Pavet said.

At its next meeting on 19 July, however, the Bureau of the Assembly will be able to discuss these facts.

Tuesday during the session of questions to the government, the keeper of the Seals Eric Dupond-Moretti had stressed that "participating in a prohibited demonstration is an offense". He had suggested to the RN who questioned him on the subject to make a report.

In November, 36 deputies of the majority had already called in vain for "sanctions" of the Assembly against deputies participating in banned demonstrations, including targeting ecologists present in Sainte-Soline against a water retention project.
