The new platform, whose presentation closely resembles that of Twitter, according to images posted on application stores, is preparing to make its debut while the social network with the blue bird is weakened.

Meta has chosen to wait before offering Threads to residents of the European Union while clarifying the consequences of the new Digital Markets Regulation (DMA), which came into force in early May, according to the source.

The DMA aims to impose specific rules on key Internet companies, including Meta, to avoid anti-competitive practices.

The group of Menlo Park (California) does not intend, eventually, to launch Threads in the European Union, at a date still to be defined, said the source close to the file.

Asked by AFP, Meta did not respond immediately.

The presentation of Threads on application stores in the United States indicates that personal data of users will be collected and used for advertising purposes related, among other things, to contacts and geolocation.

The group co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg has suffered several setbacks in recent months in the European Union on the judicial and regulatory fields.

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled on Tuesday that Meta had infringed the interests and rights of users of its services by collecting, without authorization, personal data for targeted advertising purposes.

At the end of May, Facebook's parent company was fined a record €1.2 billion by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) for breaching European data protection rules (GDPR) via Facebook.
