A man died this morning when a freight train collided with a passenger car on the Viskadal Line in Mark municipality. Life-saving measures were taken at the scene, but the man did not make it.

Starting an investigation

The collision occurred at a so-called unguarded train crossing, where barriers and light signals are missing.

"It's a very tragic accident. When the emergency services have done their part, we start an accident investigation. In detail, we do not know what happened, but we will look into it carefully, says Björn Rydhed, deputy regional director at the Swedish Transport Administration.

In 2019, the Swedish Transport Administration was commissioned by the government to work harder to secure the country's most dangerous level crossings. That is, intersections where cars and railways meet on the same "plane". The greatest risks are associated with the unattended level crossings, where both the boom and the light signal are missing.
