At a meeting at Erker's farm, those involved talked about efforts being made and why food production has declined.

"There has been a great deal of uncertainty in recent years. The war in Ukraine meant that costs increased sharply and very variable prices mean that you do not dare to invest and invest, says Anita Boman Daniels, chairman of the Federation of Swedish Farmers LRF in Dalarna.

Low degree of self-sufficiency

In Dalarna, the self-sufficiency rate is 42 percent, compared with 67 percent in the country.

90 percent of the food purchased for the county could be produced here. Other foods include exotic fruits, coffee and rice.

Heavy regulatory burden

Anita Boman Daniels wants help from politicians to reduce the number of rules that producers need to relate to.

"An animal farm can have 400 rules. After all, it costs money and puts pressure on the farmer.

Support for young farmers

She describes farmers as an old profession where generational change is a challenge.

"More younger people need to come in. There is some support, such as that you can get extra support if you are under 40 and start a new business. Even if it is not a child who takes over, you can get help to find a younger person who wants to invest, says LRF's Dala chairman Anita Boman Daniels.
