According to the report, one out of four South Korean nationals arrested in Tianjin, China and returned to South Korea in July 2020 testified that 'a criminal group purchased Korean personal information and a voice phishing hacking app from a North Korean IT worker'. contained in



This fact was largely revealed when the Korean National Intelligence Service and the police announced that they had arrested eight members of a voice phishing crime syndicate through a joint investigation.



As a result of the investigation by the police and the National Intelligence Service, they conducted voice phishing by buying personal information such as name, resident registration number, contact information, and loan status obtained by North Korean hackers by hacking into a domestic loan company.



After having victims install a 'spy app' developed by a North Korean hacker, the gang used the app to peek into the mobile phone information and usage history, pretend to be a bank or insurance company employee, and induce remittance to their account. was investigated.



At that time, the police estimated that 2 billion won in damages occurred to 200 people in Korea alone.



In this regard, the report wrote that the authorities in one member country estimated that the total amount of damage caused by their voice phishing crimes was 635 million dollars (about 900 billion won).



The expert panel also reported that, as a result of analyzing the servers used by the voice phishing organizations, unique jargon used only in North Korea was captured.
