A private Cessna plane crashed in the Baltic Sea off the Latvian coast under mysterious circumstances.

This was reported by the BBC specifying that NATO jets were taken off to follow the aircraft during its irregular flight that began in southern Spain.

Some reports claim that the plane - which was believed to have four people on board - was supposed to land in Cologne, Germany, but instead headed to the Baltic.

NATO pilots and Swedish officials following the plane could not see anyone in the cockpit. 

The Cessna 551 registered in Austria took off from the Spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera at 12:56 GMT, according to the FlightRadar24 website.

German newspaper Bild said the plane had reported cabin pressure problems after takeoff and contact was lost after clearing the Iberian Peninsula.

At 5:37 pm the aircraft was reported on FlightRadar24 as a loss of speed and altitude.

Rescue services from Sweden and a Lithuanian air force helicopter were sent after the news that the plane crashed into the sea near the Latvian city of Ventspils.
