It was "following death threats against the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes regional council broadcast on social networks" that the former president of the Republicans was placed under protection, the prosecutor's office told AFP. Privas, confirming information from the daily "L'Éveil de la Haute-Loire".

A resident of Ardèche, suspected of being the perpetrator, was arrested by the gendarmerie at his home and placed in police custody Thursday afternoon, continued the same source.

"The death threats were not nominative, but they constitute facts which justify criminal proceedings", further indicated the prosecution.
