His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, member of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council and head of the Abu Dhabi Executive Office, visited the headquarters of the Department of Education and Knowledge in Abu Dhabi, to review the strategic educational initiatives and their achievements and to adopt innovative educational methods.

During the visit, His Highness approved plans to improve learning outcomes by strengthening performance evaluation programs in partnership with schools.

His Highness was also briefed on the success and progress achieved by the initial phase of the Competency Graduation Framework, a new educational approach aimed at providing school students with future skills. His Highness directed the Department to implement the Competency Graduation Framework in all educational partnerships schools and private schools during the 2022 academic year -2023.

The Competency Graduation Framework Program will be supported by an interconnected system of schools, parents, and government agencies to guide parents, teachers, and various stakeholders in the educational sector about the new competencies that young people will acquire during their school educational journey.

The framework identifies 21 different skills within seven key competencies that include entrepreneurship, teamwork ability, critical thinking skills, global influence, digital literacy, and financial awareness.

The launch of the program follows the success of its initial phase in 12 schools in Abu Dhabi, where students took courses focusing on digital skills and financial literacy.

Sarah Awad Muslim, Minister of State for Early Education and Head of the Department of Education and Knowledge - Abu Dhabi, said: "The framework for graduating competencies enhances the consistency of the outputs of the education sector with the requirements of the labor market in the 21st century, and supports students in facing challenges and seizing opportunities in our constantly evolving world.

The framework gives students important life skills related to various sectors, and motivates them to apply them in areas that meet their passion and interest.”

She added: “Through this framework, we aim to provide every student in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi with the skills, competencies and values that ensure their success, as lifelong learners and independent responsible leaders.

Our graduates will be productive members of their communities, successful students in the future, and global citizens who hold the keys to future success.”

The Department of Education and Knowledge intends to cooperate with private schools and educational partnership schools in the emirate to integrate the framework based on enhancing the academic career of students with an education methodology based on acquiring the necessary competencies, by providing customized educational resources, ready-to-work project models, supportive activities for various curricula, and innovative competitions with At the same time, work on activating partnerships between the public and private sectors to ensure the success of these efforts.

While teachers are free to apply educational models in ways appropriate to their students, the department will provide training courses for teachers and school administrations in a way that enhances their understanding of the framework, its objectives, and ways to implement it.

Musallam emphasized: “Teachers will have the freedom to adopt appropriate methods to monitor and evaluate students’ progress in the areas of core concepts and competencies and provide the necessary assistance.

Schools will assess the extent to which students’ competencies have developed at the end of each cycle, knowing that grade 12 students must graduate from the school with a comprehensive set of skills that will support their journey in higher education and throughout their future career.”

To this end, we are working to improve our school academic programs and develop our policies, as well as raise compliance standards and audit protocols, and enhance parental involvement in their children's education.

And we have begun to cooperate with our partners in the sector to develop programs and challenges that mimic reality, to train students to overcome them and acquire the required skills covered by the framework.”

The launch of the framework constitutes a pivotal shift in education methodologies at the level of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, as it contributes to consolidating the country's leading position on various prestigious global educational indicators.

Last November, the UAE ranked first in the world among three indicators related to the fourth goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to ensure quality education, provide equitable and inclusive education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.

The UAE also topped the ranking of the primary education enrollment index and literacy in the Global Gender Gap Index report issued by the World Economic Forum.

Muslim concluded, "The framework reinforces the UAE's leadership in providing educational services, as it is based on a futuristic methodology that seeks to bring about fundamental change, and contributes to achieving Abu Dhabi's vision of building a competitive global economy based on knowledge."
