Japan concerned about China's planned military exercises in the Taiwan Strait

Japan expressed, on Wednesday, its concern over targeted military moves that China has vowed to take in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to the island of Taiwan, explaining that some of them will take place within Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Japanese government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters that "the sea areas that the Chinese side announced will be used for military exercises as of noon on August 4th include Japan's exclusive economic zone."

He added that Tokyo had expressed concern to China due to the nature of military activities, which include firing live ammunition.

"Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is important not only to Japan's security but also to the stability of the international community," Matsuno said, stressing that "Japan's consistent position has always been that it expects Taiwan-related issues to be resolved peacefully through dialogue."

In response to a question about Japan's possible support for Pelosi's visit, the government spokesman said he was not in a position to comment on the international visits of the US House Speaker.
