Unterföhring (dpa) - Even absent employees can cause damage to the company on New Year's Eve.

According to an analysis by the Allianz industrial insurer AGCS, human error at the turn of the year is an above-average cause of damage in companies.

Often these are errors that only lead to damage when nobody is present in the office, production or on the construction site over New Year's Eve and New Year's.

A prime example are burst pipes because the water was not turned off or drained.

The claims experts at the Allianz subsidiary, which specializes in large corporate customers, analyzed 178 claims from German companies at the turn of the year over the past ten years.

In fifteen percent of all cases, human error was the cause.

When analyzed by sector, the most common type of construction was the construction sector, which reported just under a quarter of New Year's Eve damage, although most construction sites were shut down over the New Year.

"Especially on New Year's Eve, there is a risk that construction sites are not properly secured and damage can occur," said AGCS manager Holger Geier.

In second place in the New Year's Eve statistics are transport damage.

In contrast to abandoned construction sites, the reason here is more that work is actually going on around the turn of the year.

"The large container ships or special couriers are also on the move on New Year's Eve, damage then happens just like on any other day of the year," said Rainer Bartzsch, AGCS Head of Claims in Central and Eastern Europe.

The main reason is therefore rough or improper handling of goods.

And because of the traditionally high travel traffic on New Year's Eve prior to Corona, airports have so far also been damaged places: A good 17 percent of the damage occurred there in the past ten years, according to AGCS, for example due to lost luggage or canceled flights.

One cause of damage, on the other hand, is rare in large companies on New Year's Eve: Fires caused by firecrackers and rockets or other causes only occurred five times in ten years.
