As noted in the Russian Foreign Ministry, the telephone conversation took place at the initiative of the United States.
“The focus was on the situation around Venezuela. Sergey Lavrov condemned the American threats against her legitimate leadership, which is blatant interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign state and a gross violation of international law, ”the foreign ministry said.
Lavrov stressed that incitement and destructive external influence “under the hypocritical pretext of rendering humanitarian aid” have nothing in common with the democratic process.
“In connection with Washington’s proposal to hold bilateral consultations on Venezuelan issues, it is indicated that we are ready for this, but we must strictly follow the principles of the UN Charter, since only Venezuelans have the right to determine their future,” the ministry said.
They added that when discussing other issues of an international character, it was agreed to continue expert contacts on Syria, Afghanistan and the Korean Peninsula.
Earlier, Lavrov, during a joint press conference with Venezuelan Vice President Delsi Rodriguez, commented on the results of voting on the resolutions of the UN Security Council on the situation in Venezuela.
