  • Approximations How much does the last two, three and four digits of the Christmas Lottery Jackpot go?

The Christmas Lottery 2023 draw will distribute 2,590 million euros in prizes this Friday, December 22. A good part of these Lottery prizes will go to El Gordo, the most coveted number and endowed with 400,000 euros to the tenth.

However, the winner of the Lottery Jackpot will not take that full money since a part of it will go to taxes for the Treasury.

As has been the case for the past few years, Christmas Lottery prizes of more than €40,000 are taxed. Below that amount, they are exempt.

What does this mean? Well, the winners of both El Gordo (400,000 euros), the Second Prize (125,000 euros) and the Third Prize (50,000 euros) must pay to the Treasury since they are the only three prizes that exceed 40,000 euros exempt from taxes.

How much tax is paid on Lottery winnings.

Once we are clear that prizes of more than 40,000 euros are taxed, it remains to be seen how much is paid. The Christmas Lottery tax is 20% and is applied after the exempt amount has been deducted.

That means that if a person has a tenth prize with El Gordo, which is 400,000 euros, 20% will be applied on 360,000 euros (400,000 minus 40,000). Thus, the winner of the First Prize must pay 72,000 euros to the Treasury and will receive 328,000 euros.

The second prize is €125,000 for each tenth or €6,250 for each euro played. The Treasury keeps 17,000 euros and the winner 108,000 euros.

While the Third Prize is €50,000 for the tenth or €2,500 per euro played. The Treasury gets 2,000 euros and the winner gets 48,000 euros.

What if I have five prizes of €10,000?

The tax-exempt amount of €40,000 in the prizes of the Christmas Lottery 2023 applies to each tenth. That is, if five prizes worth €10,000 each are won, all five will be tax-free.

What Happens in Lottery Shared Prizes

Doubts may also arise as to the shared prizes of the Christmas Lottery. These shared prizes will be taxed the same. When the lucky ones go to the bank to collect their prize, the entity will first deduct the money for taxes and then distribute the resulting amount.

The essential thing in the bank will be to identify each winner at the time of collecting and indicate the percentage of participation of each of the people.

This step is very important because if the participants are not identified from the beginning and then the prize is distributed, the Treasury may consider that we are making a donation and apply the gift tax.
