The Iranian judiciary on Saturday (December 16th) executed a man found guilty of cooperating with the Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, the Judicial Authority agency announced.

"The death penalty was carried out this morning [Saturday] in the prison of Zahedan, capital of the province of Sistan-Baluchistan against the spy of the Zionist regime," Mizan Online reported, without revealing the identity of the convict.

The judiciary accused him of "intelligence and espionage cooperation for the benefit" of Israel, "collecting classified information" and "propaganda for the benefit of groups and organizations opposed to the Islamic Republic of Iran."

The date of the arrest was not specified, but the agency said an appeal was denied.

Iran has repeatedly announced the arrest of agents working for the intelligence services of foreign countries, including its arch-enemy Israel.

More than 600 people executed in Iran since the beginning of the year

The Islamic Republic has previously accused Israel of sabotaging some of its nuclear sites and murdering several Iranian scientists.

Bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, Sistan-Baluchistan is an impoverished region, frequently the scene of attacks or clashes between security forces and armed groups.

On Saturday, 11 police officers were killed in one of the deadliest attacks claimed by a Baloch jihadist group active in the region.

In December 2022, four men were hanged after being sentenced to death for "cooperation" with Israel.

More than 600 people have been executed in Iran through the end of October this year, the highest annual figure in eight years, according to a tally by the Norway-based human rights group Iran Human Rights (IHR).
