The essentials of the watch:

  • The Israeli military on Tuesday expanded its offensive against Hamas into the southern Gaza Strip where it carried out deadly strikes. The infantry has entered the large city of Khan Younis and is fighting intense fighting on the ground, according to the same source.

  • According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, overwhelmed by the influx of wounded and short of staff and supplies, houses more than 1,000 patients and 17,000 displaced people. According to the UN, 1.8 million people, or about three-quarters of the population, have been displaced by the war in the Gaza Strip.

  • "An even more hellish scenario is about to unfold that humanitarian operations may not be able to respond to," warned the UN's humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, Lynn Hastings.

  • The situation in Gaza is "close to humanity's darkest hour," the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned. According to the WHO, the number of operational hospitals in Gaza has dropped from 36 to 18 in less than 60 days.

  • Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur: "Israel's operation in Gaza is criminal"

  • A Lebanese soldier was killed and three others wounded Tuesday in an Israeli shelling of a military post in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army said in a statement, the first death in its ranks since the start of clashes on the border between Israel and the powerful Lebanese armed movement Hezbollah.

  • France announced the freezing of the assets of Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, considered the architect of the October 7 attack on Israel.

  • According to Israel, 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in the attack, in which about 240 people were abducted and taken to the small Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas since 2007. According to Israel's new tally, 138 hostages remain in Gaza after another 105 were released during the truce, including 80 in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

  • Hamas' Health Ministry on Tuesday reported 16,248 deaths, more than 70 percent of them women and children and adolescents, in Israeli shelling of Gaza.

Namely: The number of casualties is provided by Gaza's Hamas-run Ministry of Health

The ministry collects information from hospitals in the enclave and the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Gaza's health ministry does not say how Palestinians were killed, either by Israeli airstrikes and/or barrages or failed Palestinian rocket fire. It describes all victims as victims of "Israeli aggression" and also makes no distinction between civilians and combatants.

During the four wars and the numerous clashes between Israel and Hamas, UN agencies have regularly cited Health Ministry figures in their reports. The International Committee of the Red Cross and the Palestine Red Crescent Society also use these figures.

In the aftermath of previous episodes of war, the United Nations Humanitarian Office published casualty figures based on its own research into medical records. The UN figures are largely in agreement with those of Gaza's Ministry of Health, with a few differences.
